ISSUES
Mental Health
I care deeply about mental health. I know there is a serious mental health issue in this community that includes the use of drugs and violence against women. The suicide rate in Hastings is 22.5%, higher than the Nebraska of 14.5% (in 2023). Males from 30 to 49 have the highest risk. Add to that, the shortage of mental health professionals in rural areas. This is a community issue.
Environmental Concerns including water quality and land use
Hastings has serious water quality concerns. For decades, the city has dealt with high nitrate levels in its municipal wells due to agricultural runoff. Lake Hastings has been classified as "impaired" since 2010, with high levels of algae growth and sedimentation. Hastings is also home to three EPA Superfund sites requiring long-term cleanup. These are ongoing issues that need continued investment and community attention.
Education Funding
Public Education funding is always at risk in the United States in general. Nebraska is not an exception. State cutbacks and the rise of voucher programs are a threat to children's education, although there is a split between vouchers supporters and vouchers critics. Policymakers need to take urgent action to fully fund Public Education.
Housing Affordability and availability
When I first moved to Hastings, there were no available properties to rent. I thought about living in a hotel temporarily, until someone mentioned Good Samaritan Housing. I lived there until I was able to purchase property. I have heard similar stories. The housing availability in Hastings is precarious. There are no sufficient apartments or houses to rent. As more people move into the city looking for job opportunities, it is important that they have a place to stay and call their own.
